Panthers Run Falls Short

The Mehlville Panther’s strong defense and hearts was not enough to stop the Cor Jesu Chargers and their strong offense Thursday night in District Varsity Girls soccer action at Mehlville High School. Add to their strong offense the Chargers goaltending was perfect to earn a 4-0 shutout.

The Chargers scored a goal in the first half with less than five minutes left on the clock. They went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.  Although the Panthers came out strong in the second half the Chargers scored three unanswered goals to earn the shutout as well as the right to move on in the Districts.

Mehlville entered the districts with a 5-13 record seeding them fourth. Two nights earlier they took on the Oakville Tigers seeded first with 7-8 record.  It took full regulation, two overtime periods, and fourteen penalty kicks for the Panthers to beat the Tigers.

Athletic Director Dr. Tim Champion was quoted as saying it was a great year.

Tom Brannan Varsity Coach stated “We have some injuries that plaque us this year. We had a few things going against us this year but the memory will definitely be the win against Oakville but they played a hard game.  We look forward to next year as we have some big shoes to fill”.

Cor Jesu on the other hand came in seeded third with a 10-9 record. Two nights ago they beat Lindbergh by a goal minutes in the second overtime period.  They will now go on to meet Troy Buchanan who beat Holt this evening 4-0.  These games will be played Tuesday may 24, 2016 with location to be determined.
