Pucks to Hoops

Two schools in the same geographical area bring their JV teams to the Kirkwood Ice Rink for a High School hockey game.  The final score doesn’t tell you the story of the game by any means.

The visiting Vianney Griffins brought their JV boys to take on the hosting Kirkwood JV Pioneers.  As you watched the warmup you got to think that this is going to be one good game.

The Pioneers started fast and hit first getting the first goal of the game on their very first rush.

Penalties were handed out as well in the first period with Kirkwood getting the first power play but were unable to capitalize on it.

Kirkwood scored their second goal while both teams were full strength.  At this point Vianney substituted their goaltender.

There was a double minor handed out one to each team. However neither team could capitalize on it.

Vianney finally got it right late in the first scoring their first goal of the game.  The first period ended 2 – 1 in favor of the Pioneers.

Vianney came out striking in the second period scoring the tying goal on their first offensive rush.  This tied the game at two apiece.

Kirkwood answered with two more goals.  This led to another goaltender change for Vianney. Vianney added another penalty to their game stats in the second period.

Kirkwood started the third period off a man short.  This was due to a penalty called in the dying seconds of the second period.

As the action increased and the clock clicking away Vianney was awarded two minor penalties giving the Pioneer a two man advantage.  However they were unable to capitalize and the Pioneers got a minor penalty with eleven seconds left in the double minor to Vianney.

In the final few minutes of the game Pioneers drew a second minor giving the Griffins a two man advantage.  They pulled their goalie in lieu of an extra attacker in the final minutes but were unable to break the Pioneer defense.

The game ended with the Pioneers winning 4 – 2.  The Pioneers outshot the Griffins 20 – 13.

In other high school action Tuesday night we had the hoops going on over at Westminster Christian Academy.  The freshmen boys played a freshmen boys team from St. Charles but we do not have the score at the time of writing.

The JV Lady Wildcats took on the JV ladies from Hazelwood East.  The Wildcats beat them by eight points with a final score of 52 – 44.

The same two teams pitted their varsity girls against each other that ended with almost the identical score.  The Wildcats won 51 – 45.
